Tulum: General Information

Tulum's archeological site

Tulum is one of the most amazing places in the Riviera Maya. A curious combination of ancient glory - with its famous Mayan ruins placed just in front of the Caribbean - and natural magnificence.

It is located 79 miles south of Cancun, 38 miles south of Playa del Carmen and 14 miles south of Akumal.

Tulum is comprised by three different and separated sites: the archeological area, the town and the hotel zone.

The archeological site is one of the most visited in Mexico. Facing the Caribbean, above the only cliff in all the coastal strip (Yucatan's peninsula geography is almost flat, with no mountains), this place gives you the impression of a magical site. Don't miss the opportunity and visit Tulum ruins; you can arrange a guided tour or go by yourself... anyway you will enjoy it!

Tulum pueblo has all the basic facilities you need: a supermarket, a bank, several ATM's, money exchange offices, gas stations, restaurants, gift shops and much more. Nonetheless this is not a fancy place, you will love to visit it and be in touch a little closer with the local culture ... and with the unique cultural blend with the new 'locals': Italians, Americans, Canadians, etc...

The hotel zone is in front of the ocean, with one of the most beautiful beaches in all the Riviera Maya. The hotels are small and rustic, most of them without electricity. Their cabins are built right on the sandy beach, so the experience of staying here is really unforgettable. The 'natural' concept goes so far that you can find nude beaches around here.
